Camp 2008

Dr. Marty Marks, Director of Bands mmarks@adrian.edu

HOORAY!  IT’S TIME FOR OUR SECOND BAND CAMP!

Schedule (subject to revision)

First of all, here’s something you and your parents need to know:

  • We won’t over-work you
  • We won’t risk heat injuries (your checklist should include fans, water, and sunscreen)
  • There will be plenty of time to eat, sleep and socialize
  • I like to have fun and get the job done - no “boot camp” atmosphere allowed, and no initiations
  • Camp attendance is required.  Please contact me as soon as possible about concerns or possible conflicts

Wednesday, Aug 13

  • 1 to 4 pm - Band members may check into student housing.  NOTE:  Let me know if you are checking in, so I can submit your name to the housing director.
  • 6 to 10 pm - Get Acquainted Reception/Meeting/Rehearsal in Spencer Hall (our bandroom).  I will answer questions, hand out materials, and check out instruments/lockers/accessories.  We may even get started on uniforms!

Thursday and Friday, Aug 21-22

·         No rehearsals scheduled during the freshman Mackinaw trip – those remaining can choose to rehearse, have initial individual sessions, or relax

Saturday, Aug 23

·         8 am to 4 pm – Swanton Corn Festival Parade – this time frame includes travel and lots of food – more details later this summer

Don’t forget to bring and use these items:

  • your usual moving-into-the-dorm stuff
  • pencil
  • instrument accessories (bring your favorite reeds - our supplier may not have your first choice)
  • water container (everyone must bring water to all rehearsals)
  • sunscreen (not optional - severe sunburns will not illicit a compassionate response!)
  • appropriate shoes/socks - no boots or open-toed shoes in rehearsal
  • appropriate clothing (I will try to trust your judgment on this issue.  Don’t make me get specific!  If you wouldn’t want to see ME wearing it, don’t wear it to band practice!  Regarding messages on t-shirts – I love the constitution, but free speech doesn’t always apply at band camp – use discretion!)

The Fall Band Syllabus will be made available to you soon.  In the mean time, the most frequently asked question is, “What do I have to buy for band?”  Here’s a list:

·         Marching or Guard shoes - black with black soles - around $25 (your high school shoes might work)

·         2 Black band t-shirts - available at the bookstore - REQUIRED - I don’t have a specific cost yet (cost may not be the same as last year), but it will be less than $10 each.  If we take our jackets off at a hot football game, and you don’t have one of these, you’ll put your jacket back on!

·         Flip folders and lyres - I can no longer give these away – estimated cost: $6 for the folder and $5 for the lyre – chances are excellent the actual cost will be less.  I will provide additional flip folder windows, but don’t overuse this benefit.

·         Accessories - reeds, neckstraps, etc. - I will furnish the first pair of snare sticks and other percussion mallets/beaters - you buy your replacements.

·         Guard uniforms (including gloves) will be provided.  Band uniform gloves will be provided this year - maybe not in future years.  I will also buy everyone a hot weather hat!

·         Students will pay for repairs on loaned college owned instruments.  Instruments will be loaned in excellent working condition.

·         Concert Band attire will match this year!  For about $75, I will be able to put everyone in a simple black shirt and pants.  It may cost more if you require a skirt.  Returning students note: We will change to a different shirt this year.  The pants should be a black “dockers” style – no cargos, no jeans, no flairs or gauchos.  If you own a pair that might fit this criterion, show them to me the first day of band camp.  Otherwise, plan on acquiring a pair through our vendor.

·         There will be a $10 fee for marching uniform cleaning maintenance.  Everyone will pay this fee.

Feel free to keep calling or emailing me with questions.  I look forward to seeing you soon!

Yours truly,

Dr. Marty Marks
